The Friends of St Michael’s

Since 1963 the Friends has served as a focus for people who love St Michael’s Church to work together to ensure that this wonderful building is not only preserved but also made more fitted for its role as a centre for worship and community events, and as a place of welcome to its many visitors.

How the Friends works today:

Stewarding

From April to October there is usually a volunteer Steward in church to welcome visitors, and to help in any way they can to make the visitor’s experience a special one whatever their reason for visiting the church.

Talks and guided tours

It is usually possible (given adequate notice) to arrange for a visiting group to be given a guided tour or talk about the church. Groups taking advantage of this offer have included school parties, Cub Scouts, Mothers’ Union branches, U3A groups, etc.

Bookstall

A wide variety of Christian books, information leaflets and souvenirs of a visit to the church are on sale. The Bookstall operates on an “honesty box” principle, with money for purchases to be put in the adjacent wall safe. Money raised by the Bookstall is used to fund projects.

Guide Book

The guide book (£2 from the bookstall) acts as a tour guide to the church, pointing out the most interesting features.

Projects to enhance the church building

In recent years the Friends have supported and provided the following:

New carpets in St Anne’s Chapel and the Chapter House.
New chairs for the Chapter House and Choir Vestry.
Repairs to the boiler.
New handrails within the church.
Upgrading the lighting of the church.
New doors for the North entrance.
Restoration of the painting of the Last Supper
Funding

The Friends raises most of its money through annual donations, legacies and profits from the Bookstall.
